Replanting your Outdoor Containers
Before you replant your outdoor containers, freshen up the potting soil to get them off to a good start. Remove the old soil from your containers and mix with fresh compost and a little fertilizer. Moisten the soil slightly as you mix, then refill your pots. If you had insect or disease problems last year, it’s best to discard last year’s soil, and scrub your container thoroughly with a weak bleach solution.

An Overheating Overview
My car is starting to run a little hot. I don't want to be stranded by the side of the road with steam coming out of my ears and the hood. Any advice?

I'd say take it to a professional repair shop and let them handle it, but the cost of diagnosis alone could be enough to give you a full head of steam without even opening the radiator.

Instead, let's do some under-cover, err, under-hood detective work ourselves and save the $50.00…$60.00…$75.00 an hour most repair shops would charge to run the same tests.

First, either clean the engine yourself or have it done professionally. Too much grease, oil and dirt can hide leaks and keep cooling air from the engine. Inspect the radiator for damage and clean it of bugs and debris. Get a new radiator cap if the rubber gasket on the old one is dried-up, cracked or missing. Check to make sure it is the correct cap for your make and model. Look into the radiator or the radiator overflow bottle. If the coolant looks rusty, flush the system and fill with 50% plain tap water and 50% ethylene glycol anti-freeze. Inspect all radiator and radiator hoses and replace any with leaks, cracks or soft spots. Also tighten all hose clamps.

Check all engine belts for excessive wear or cracks, especially the V-ribbed serpentine belt which operates many of the engine's hangons. If the belt grooves show excessive cracks or if pieces have actually been "chunked" off, replace them.

There you have it. The basic repair shop procedures for finding and repairing most over-heating problems.

Sweet Dreams Pillowcase
Valentine’s Day was coming close and I had no idea what to get my boyfriend of 3 years! I thought and thought and thought and finally came up with a simple - but fantastic - gift! I took a new pillow, a pillow case, a scanned picture, and paper that you iron on to fabrics. I put our picture in the middle the pillowcase and wrote “I LOVE YOU BABY” on the top and bottom. He loved it!

Happiness Is . . .

Happiness -- or at least positive, outward-reaching emotions -- may be all in your head.

The left, front side of your head, that is.

And inhibiting, negative, withdrawing emotions may be controlled by the right side of your brain, says Richard Davidson, a University of Wisconsin psychologist who has been studying the physiology of emotions for nearly 20 years.

Davidson's pioneer research, backed by a $10 million National Institutes of Health grant, involves positron emission tomography (PET) and a new generation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanners, the Washington Post reported.

Davidson has localized the positive and negative emotional centers in comparable areas of the left and right prefrontal cortex, just behind the forehead.

Davidson says people with more left-side activity generally describe themselves as happier and have a more positive mood than people with increased right-side activity, the story reported.

Transplant Groundcovers
Fill in bare spots in your perennial groundcovers with transplants from fuller areas. Before the plants flower, use a sharp blade to dig up the clumps, then divide them into individual plants and replant. The remaining plants will spread to fill the holes. Keep the transplants well watered until they take hold.

Repair Shop Quotas and Contests
Using the employee rest room in a repair garage the other day, I saw a wall poster that mechanics could win Caribbean cruises by increasing their business. Is this legal?

I don't know whether you saw an old posting or if some of the dishonest business boosters are still at it. If the latter is true, as they say, you can tell auto repair people but you can't tell them much, or discourage them either -- even with the threat of going to jail.

Not content to make quite a good income from auto-repair work, four of the largest auto maintenance and repair chains in the country were caught selling unneeded and unnecessary repairs to their customers several years back. Undercover investigators with specially prepared vehicles found that these organizations had massive programs to sell non-essential, high-profit repairs due to quotas, sales commissions and contests. Rewards ran to upscale Caribbean cruises and cash prizes as high as $10,000 for mechanics and managers who met certain preset billing quotas every day within the contest periods.

Defending itself, one of the major offenders, a chain department store auto service facility claimed that replacing good parts "before they fail" was a common practice in the industry and good preventative maintenance.

However, faced with insurmountable proof of widespread dishonest practices, they finally hemmed and hawed that maybe some "mistakes" had been made and agreed to pay $8,000,000 just to settle the charges in one state alone. Further, they agreed to satisfy the claims for a total of 90,000 "rooked" customers nationwide, and to forswear and forever surrender quotas, commissions and contests.

If what you saw is fresh and where you saw it is one of those guys, hey, forever isn't what it used to be. And neither is honesty.

Savvy Shopping
Take advantage of stores who offer to match their competitor’s advertised prices. You can get all the stores’ lowest prices by taking their ads to one store that honors them all.

Keep the Romance Alive...
When you feel like the romance and excitement has died in your relationship, try pretending that you're meeting for the first time. When you kiss, imagine that this is your first shared kiss. Look away when you glance at each other and smile to yourself like the day you first made eye contact. Really make yourself believe that you are just getting to know this person you have known for years. It's guaranteed to give you butterflies!

Eschewing Good Food

If you're waiting in line at a trendy new restaurant you're trying out for the first time, you could get a clue about the quality of the food by the way the diners are eating.

According to Neuroscience and Biobehavior Reviews, the better the food, the faster you'll eat.

When a group of French researchers studied eating behavior, they found that the more people liked their food, the less time they spend chewing, and the less time they took between bites.
