Today's Dog-8-31-2017-NEW THREAD

Barkley the Pekingese/Toy Poodle, the Dog of the Day
Name: Barkley
Age: Five years old
Gender: MaleBreed: Pekingese/Toy Poodle
Home: Nashville, Tennessee, USA

Barkley is an incredible dog. He's a Peekapoo (Pekingese and Toy Poodle mix), extremely smart, loves to play fetch, and completely hinks he is a human, all the way to sleeping with his head on a pillow. But let me tell you why he is our Miracle Puppy and the TRUE reason why he is incredibly special to us:

My boyfriend and I actually found Barkley on Craigslist for sale. Little did we know, we saved his life. We got Barkley from a woman that had him living in an outdoor cage with three pitbulls. Don't get me wrong, I love all breeds of dogs, but when we got Barkley, he was all of five pounds, living in an outdoor cage with three very large (in comparison) dogs, one of which was pregnant and territorial/aggressive toward Barkley.

We had him for four days when he got very sick. We took him to the vet immediately and after a few tests, he was diagnosed with Parvo. For those of you who don't know what Parvo is, just know that it's one of the most aggressive and violent diseases a puppy can be diagnosed with, with a fatality rate of about 93%. We were devastated. We knew the treatment was going to be on the upside of three or four thousand dollars with no guarantee, but of course, we had no choice… we had to try. Honestly, we had no idea how we were going to afford such treatment, but we knew we had to do it, we had to save this pup's life and give him a second chance. We KNEW he deserved a happy home and we already had so much love for the little nugget, there was just no question.

Barkley had intestinal Parvo, which meant the complete interior lining of his intestines were gone, and his white blood cell count had almost completely bottomed out. Barkley went through very extreme treatment and was hospitalized in complete isolation in ICU for seven days and nights, went through two plasma transfusions and was on IVs for fluid and nutrition throughout the entire time. He was in complete isolation and only doctors were allowed in (fully covered with gloves) to go in and see/touch him.

On day four, after the first plasma transfusion failed, I begged them to let me in. I just wanted to hold our baby and hopefully give him an ounce of hope, to remember that we loved him and we needed him to fight (the nurse went against hospital policy to let me in.) After seven days of treatment, we got to pick him up, because our little miracle puppy had survived Parvo! The second transfusion was a success! Barkley was five pounds when we initially got him, during his treatment and while he had Parvo, he was down to 3.5 lbs, and then, three months later, our sweet, happy, and full of life pup was up to eleven pounds! He is now, years later, one healthy and happy boy!

Not to mention, he's probably the cutest puppy on the entire planet! (and I don't even think I'm being a biased mom- ha!) Trust me, he knows he is one special dog!

Today's Dog-9-1-2017
Winry the Border Collie/Golden Retriever mix, the Dog of the Day
Name: Winry
Age: Four years old
Gender: FemaleBreed: Border Collie/Golden Retriever mix
Home: Illinois, USA

Winry is my "heart dog," plain and simple. I have loved dogs before her, I love dogs now, and I will love dogs after her, but there will never be another Winry. I had been obsessed with getting a puppy. I didn't care where the puppy came from, but I had found out that Petfinder was a great place to look. I fell in love with many puppies and was either passed up with missed out on them all. I had an image in my head- Fluffy, golden, with a dark muzzle. Now, don't ask me why I had that in my head, but that is what I wanted. I applied for so many dogs (none of which matched that description) and still, they all fell through. Then, there she was, my dream dog, "Grace," with two words that crushed my soul ... "Adoption Pending." I moved on, trying again and again, but to no avail. Finally, I had a foster through a rescue that said he would come over to do a home check and I could meet the puppy! I was so excited, but when he arrived, it wasn't the puppy I applied for. He was an adorable hound mix with long ears and short fur. I was upset, but still considered him.

Eventually, I passed on the puppy and decided to just give up. I was so heartbroken. I threw myself on my bed later that night and cried. As I cried, my phone rang. I didn't recognize the number, but answered anyway (which is strange because I rarely do that). It was the foster I met earlier. He said "I have a fluffy puppy for you if you're interested. She's had an adoption pending for two weeks now and they just won't come to pick her up and I am done waiting. I would have mentioned her before, but my family thought about keeping her ourselves because she's so wonderful, but if you want her, she's yours." I couldn't even speak, I was so excited! I had no idea what puppy he was talking about, but something told me to say, Yes.

We traveled to meet him half way (he'd already done a check on our apartment). I could hardly contain my excitement. We arrived at the halfway point and there she was at the end of the leash. Fluffy, golden, dark snout ... she was Grace, the puppy I had fallen for on Petfinder than I never even tried for! I couldn't even believe it. She was about 14 weeks old and already around 20 pounds (we now think she was a bit older than that). She was a little nervous and the cars driving by scared her, but I laid down on the ground while my boyfriend filled out the paperwork for me. We paid her adoption fee and that was that. She wouldn't walk on the leash so I had to scoop her up to get her to the car.

That was my first experience with adopting a dog and for over a year it was just me and her (and my cat who was also adopted years before). After Winry, I was hooked. I have adopted and rescued every other pet since then. I now have four more dogs, three more cats, rats, mice, and ducks all adopted. At four years old, Winry is not just the most beautiful and perfect dog I could have ever asked for with so many tricks and commands under her belt that I forget them, but she is also my fully task trained Service Dog! My wonderful Winry Grace was the best thing to ever happen to me and she saves my life each and every day from the moment I adopted her. I now work for a rescue, volunteer and foster, and have dedicated my life to my passion for saving animals. My photography hobby also blossomed through photographing her and it's grown and grown! She even has her own
Instagram account!

Winry isn't just the dog of the day, week, month, or even year ... she's the dog of my life!

Today's Dog-9-2-2017
Sudz the Australian Cattle Dog/Chihuahua mix, the Dog of the Day
Name: Sudz
Age: Two years old
Gender: MaleBreed: Australian Cattle Dog/Chihuahua mix
Home: Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA

I have wanted a dog all my life. I grew up an only child and was never allowed to have a dog. As I grew up and became an adult, I still felt the need to have a dog. So, I finally got an apartment that would accept small dogs. I was really lucky because no one had a dog in this small apartment building at the time, and the landlord gave the okay.

Back in 2015, I was taking some positive reinforcement classes for the emotional mind. This was around the time I got the approval to have a dog. It just so happened a friend of mine's friend was having puppies. They were all little mutts and I had to wait about six weeks for him. So, I started thinking of names for him and really wanted it to be as special as he would be. Sudz is actually an abbreviation for emotional positive reinforcement scaling system. Suds- stands for Subjective Units of Disturbance Scale. And by the way, I had a DNA test to prove his breeds and he is an Australian Cattle Dog/Chihuahua mix - he has no terrier in him, though people often guess he is one!

Sudz loves camping, walking, going to the Dog Park, doggy daycare, and visiting family. He is a super social and loving dog. He walks with a certain swag to him and everyone just knows he's a happy dog. He really loves climbing rocks and hiking. He is not a huge fan of water, but he deals with it.

I honestly do not know where I'd be in my life if it wasn't for him. We lost our home this year 2017 and have had to move around a lot. We were homeless for several months and l was lost in many different ways. However, I was never lost long because I had my dog and he showed me there is happiness even if we didn't have a permanent home.

Today's Dog-9-3-2017

Roxy the German Shepherd, the Dog of the Day
Name: Roxy
Age: Six and a half months old
Gender: FemaleBreed: German Shepherd Dog
Home: Melbourne, Australia

My dog's name is Roxy, she is six months and a half, so still a growing baby! She is a German Shepherd and she is very energetic, curious and loving.

She is the first pet we have had and she is a very playful fun pet to play with. She loves the game fetch and knows how to sit, drop and bring the ball back. Her hobbies are going to the dog park and playing outside. Her favorite toys are her yellow rubber ball and the tug of war toy. She is very affectionate and looks after her family all the time. She likes being the center of attention, but that doesn't mean she can't be a good companion. We love her very much!
